Commitment

1176741_68006109So, why this site? Why the name “Jesus in Disguise”? What does that even mean anyway? I got the idea for the title of this site from Mother Teresa. In an interview she gave, she was quoted as saying:

The dying, the cripple, the mental, the unwanted, the unloved, they are Jesus in disguise.

This goes along with a verse that has had a huge impact on my life over the last year, which is Matthew 25:40:

40 “Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’”

This part of Matthew describes a final judgment, and one of the aspects of that judgment is that those who were judged to not have a relationship with God; one of the aspects of that was that they did not help those who were less fortunate or unable to help themselves. To God, this is the same as not treating him this way. I’m not saying that if you don’t help people who are less fortunate you’ll go to hell, but God does expect us to help those less fortunate.

Along with this, I prayed a while back for God to break me. I prayed for God to break my heart for the same things that break His heart. I know, a very dangerous prayer. God has done just what I asked Him to. At first I thought maybe I was depressed or something, but once I took a look at what was making me sad, I realized what was happening.

God had broken my heart. He had broken it for the homeless, the voiceless, and the helpless. Those that couldn’t help themselves, or didn’t have a way to help themselves. So now I’ve made the choice to actively help those that can’t, to do something I feel God has asked me to be a part of.

There’s one problem. I started this site, and intend to keep bringing to light those situations where people need help. The problem is, I don’t know how to get actively involved, and I don’t fully know how active God wants me to be. So I could really use some help in how to get seriously involved. I don’t know where it’ll take me, or what I’ll be doing, but I’m committed to making a difference.

Do you have suggestions for me? How have you committed to living out what God has called you to?

Welcome

258444_3431Welcome to the new site. I think you’ll like it here, and hopefully you’ll make it your own. I decided to migrate the old Jesus in Disguise site here to a new blog so that it can get a little more visibility, and allow me to be more flexible in the design and how I can customize things.

After being away from blogging for a little while, I had to sit down and think about whether blogging was really worth it. Are people going to read it? Are people going to care what I have to say? Do I care what others have to say? I made the conclusion that regardless of what others had to say, I wanted to write about the things that were important to me, and maybe, if those things were important to others, they would find a way here too and make this site a lot of fun.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
So what do you think of the new site?

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years

[A report]
book coverSo, as part of the sweet program I am a part of with Thomas Nelson Publishers, I get the great opportunity to read books and write reviews on them. In return, I get the books for free. This book review is particularly special, in that I received Donald Miller’s new book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years before it was released to the public. Not only that, but they also included a second copy for me to give away to someone else, and so it was given to my fellow student ministries staff and the student ministries director at my church.

Honestly, I thought this book was amazing. It hit very much at home for me since I have been working on defining my life a lot over the past year, and working on making good changes. I haven’t read any of Donald Miller’s other books, but this one makes me want to go back and read them all.

The premise of A Million Miles is that your life is a story, and is your story actually interesting? Don give a ton of examples from his life regarding how he had been living his life and just letting it pass him by, until a movie producer and writer contact him and want to turn one of his previous books into a movie. Through this process, he learns that life is a story, and your story can either be boring or it can be exciting, full of great chapters and awesome adventures. I’m not going to spoil it by telling you how Don changes his life based on this, but you definitely need to read it and find out, and it may give you a ton of insight into changes you need to make in your life to make your story more interesting.

One of the parts that struck me the most is when Don comes home and looks around his house, and it’s like no one lives there. He says his house looked like a stage on which fake props had been set. There are no pictures of anything anywhere in the house. Nothing that shows a story that he was living, with chapters from amazing events in his life. It’s basically like he wasn’t living a story at all, or it was so boring that there was nothing to display from it. This hit home for me as I sat reading this in my living room, and I looked around, and realized that I didn’t have a whole lot of pictures or mementos as well. I wasn’t living a story.

Don’s writing is very conversational in this book, and it is a great way to tell his story. At times he’s depreciating of himself, all of it making for a great vehicle for this book. I’ve taken what’s been said in this book to heart. It’s not meant to be a self-help book in any manner, and I don’t think it’s written in that way, but it does greatly make you think about how you’re living your life and if it’s worthwhile, or boring and pointless. I highly recommend you go out and pick up this book and read it. It will at least make you think…
